STRAYS OF BALI - Documentary in-production
Synopsis
Australian Linda Buller is on a gruelling mission to save Bali's tattered street dogs, but can one Western woman reach out to Bali’s dogs and start a revolution?
She may be a tough-talking Aussie, but 60-year-old Linda Buller’s passion and love of animals is second-to-none. Linda first came to the tropical island of Bali 20 years ago to sober up and get her life back on track, and ended up staying to start a career as an artist. Yet it wasn’t long until the endless sight of horrifically wounded dogs roaming the streets inspired this feisty animal-lover to set up a dog refuge centre with little funds in an abandoned gallery and start collecting maimed dogs and puppies from the street.
Now local resistance to Linda’s plans, plus an endless stream of dumped dogs, cats and monkeys, and a serious rabies outbreak, means Linda’s mission is one hard task. And to top it all off, just as her centre is facing overpopulation and closure by mid 2012, Linda is hit by typhoid and dengue fever, forcing her to reluctantly hand over the shelter’s reigns to volunteer and fellow Aussie Ebony Owens.
But Linda won’t let this slow her down, and with Ebony and a stream of dedicated volunteers help she continues to work towards her dream to build Bali’s first ever dog sanctuary. She knows this is the only hope for her furry friends, most of which have lost limbs or suffered severe illness and are still in recovery. It is these dogs that are hardest to adopt out to suitable families, as the Balinese have a different cultural viewpoint on keeping pets and how much to nurture them. As Hindus, they believe humans who lead a less than perfect life are destined for canine reincarnation.
Meanwhile Ebony and the local Balinese staff continue to pick up, treat and vaccinate dilapidated dogs on a daily basis, and Linda is unwavering in her plan to build a sanctuary, no matter what the cost.
